Three Old Growth Trees
Three old growth trees
Two huge towering tulip poplars
One ancient maple made beautiful by the
Struggle through time, trouble, storms, sickness
Its thick trunk, perfect in its imperfections
Sheared by storms, gnarled with heavy knobs
The maple almost as big around as it is tall
It’s a den tree.
Every year a new family of coons are raised in its woody bosom
All three surviving centuries of struggle
With roots deeper and broader unseen
Than the huge beauty we see.
