Stewart Acuff: Today’s GOP is a Grand Old Pariah

Today’s Morning Joe ran a story about the dissolution of the Republican Party in California. One statewide Republican office holder said his party is at its lowest point and that it is time to rebuild.

While I’m not an expert on California politics, it is not too hard to understand why the GOP is sinking on the west coast:

  • Diversity: California is a mixed amalgam of all America. The GOP is only talking to white men. The GOP’s hatred of immigrants is received as an attack on Latinos in California and every state with significant Latino voting populations.
  • Women: California has two female US Senators and many other female office holders. Generally, California women see the GOP as anti-women including talk of invasive sonograms (state rape), anti-abortion including in cases of rape and incest, and the determined failure of the GOP to do anything to level the playing field for women.
  • The Labor Movement: The California labor movement especially in LA is one of the largest and most active in America. They have also become a community labor movement, uniting on issues that affect workers who don’t have unions, entering alliances with immigrant worker centers, and doing everything legally possible to beat the GOP.

These are not the only reasons for the GOP collapse in California, but they are steps we all can take to defeat the Grand Old Pariah.
