Shiloh Battlefield
Written by Stewart Acuff
There’s a buck and six does
Grazing in the meadow next to the woods
On this Shiloh Battlefield
They’re about a hundred yards away
But three of the does took notice
So I retreated to lean against this one of many markers
On this hallowed and sacred ground
26,000 of God’s children, fathers, husbands, sons, uncles, deacons, and preachers
Died those two days
I came here to think of her and talk to her
And to pray.
And then I saw the deer.
Coincidence I’m sure……….but for one thing.
Only Almighty and All-Loving God could make this place of such horror and pain and terror and death such a place of peace now.
My Chickasaw forebears would see the deer as a gift and a reminder of her. And so they are.
