“This is one of the worst weeks for any presidential candidate in a general election that any of us can remember” said Conservative tv host and former Congressman Joe Scarborough of the Mitt Romney campaign. Scarborough went on to say, “Mitt Romney is blowing this race.” Romney and his staff are going into the second week of Romney gaffes and unforced errors.
Last week, Romney broke with longstanding campaign unwritten rules by pouring gas on a huge crisis when US embassies came under attack in Egypt and Libya. Without talking to the White House or State Department, Romney held a news conference in the middle of the night to try to make political hay off the crisis.
It was at best stupid, reckless, and self-serving. At worst it was putting Romney’s own political ambition ahead of the United States.
Romney made it all worse by saying he has a “terrific campaign” and a “campaign team that works well together.”
Now it is time for us, American progressives and trade unionists and women and people of color and seniors and all workers and LGBT folks to drive this campaign home and turn America around.
