Power: A new blog from Stewart Acuff

Power is a word that puts off too many people. Many, or probably most of us, think that power, or the concept of power is unseemly or ugly. We confuse power with the illegitimate or immoral abuse of power. But power is very simply how we get things done. Political power is how we win elections, affect public policy, and make social and economic change. Power in the workplace is how we win a fair share of the wealth we create. Community power is how we make our neighborhoods safer or more pleasant, or desirable places to live. Power, quite simply is how we get things done.

Power can be used for good or ill.

Congressional Republicans, in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, have expanded their use of power, and have grown their power to both stop President Obama and the will of the American people at the expense of the nation.

It is part of our responsibility as progressives to understand power and to use it for the good of the country and the good of our people.

We progressives need more power to push for policies that will expand the middle class instead of shrinking it, lift our economy out of depression, and overcome the will and greed of the financial elite.

The only way average people can build more power and do good things is by organizing, combining the strength of our numbers, to overcome the power of money held by the financial elite.

Please order a copy of my new book Playing Bigger Than You Are: A Life in Organizing to learn more about power and organizing.
