Organize to Save Our Democracy

In this space this week we have shown how the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision erodes and undermines our democracy. In another piece we talked about some of the requisite elements of democracy and how those elements are being systematically eviscerated.

Earlier, we again in this space  outlined 18 different things average Americans can do to organize for this November’s election.

BUT THE STAKES IN THIS ELECTION ARE MUCH HIGHER THAN WHICH PARTY AND WHICH INDIVIDUALS ARE ELECTED.

IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT LOVERS OF DEMOCRACY ORGANIZE NOT JUST FOR PRESIDENT OBAMA AND OTHER DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES, BUT FOR OUR DEMOCRACY.

- We must join together as individuals and organizations to protect the fundamental freedom to vote. Radical Rightwingers are working all over America to legislate new requirements that turn the right to vote into a privilege–a privilege too many seniors, African-Americans, Latinos, urban dwellers who don’t drive and who don’t have drivers’ license. This issue has to be primary for all our organizations, unions, and communities of faith.

- We must make every effort to build a turnout in support of democracy at this election.

- Democracy is the issue in November’s election.

Please order a copy of my new book, Playing Bigger Than You Are: A Life in Organizing to find out how you can organize in your community, and we can declare victory for democracy this Fall.
