Now that we’ve resolved or avoided the so-called fiscal cliff in a pretty strong – raising the tax rates on the wealthy, saving Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid; we begin the sparring soon punching over raising the debt ceiling.
Raising the debt ceiling was once a perfunctory formality to allow the Congress to pay its bills.
Radical rightwing Republican Members of Congress will try to extort President Obama and the country and try to hold America hostage to force budget cuts that will be harmful to our nation and our people.
Please remember two things:
- Defaulting on the bills of the United States and undermining the full faith and credit of our country would harm the status of America in the world and send the world’s economy into a tailspin plunging millions of working families into poverty including here in our country.
- All this Washington wrestling and wrangling take place in the contest of historic wealth and income inequality, 35 years of stagnant wages, and growing poverty including 40% of our kids’ experiencing hunger at some time every month.
Our government must be focused on a fairer economy that works for everyone and builds the middle class.
We ought to be looking for organic ways to put more money into the pockets of working families to pour back into the economy to lift our country of our economic ditch.
