Celebrating Woody Guthrie

Went to a Laborfest last night celebrating Woody Guthrie

The union folks and progressives and great musicians put it on.

We all got lifted up by Woody’s love of love.

He fought the fascists and for the unions and for all the Tom Joad‘s in California – the folks chased away from Oklahoma and Texas by the dust and the bankers and the same sort of folks trying their best to make us all poor right now.

And we need Woody and his songs and his words today just as much as people did then.

We had a woman named Monica Taylor sing last night. We all went back and forth, from singing his songs to reading what he wrote, and this Monica sang like I hope to hear if I get to heaven.

Mainly we need love, just love, as the Bible and Woody said “God is Love.”

Too much damn hate over stuff ain’t nobody’s business. We need a whole lot of love.

Then we need the rich people to do their fair share.

God bless Woody Guthrie. He teaches us how to love better.
