Before buying materials and building an Asian platform bed, you must produce detailed plans. An Asian style bed resembles a platform bed in that it consists of a shallow frame and a flat surface of solid wood or wood planks. This surface accepts the mattress, thus eliminating the need for a traditional boxing spring. While some Asian-style beds have bedside tables, footboards and chassis posts, others consist of four simple rails and four corner posts that raise the frame a few inches from the ground. The dimensions should be based on the mattress you intend to use with the frame. Custom Asian style beds hold a regular mattress size.
The materials that you use for an Asian platform bed are largely a matter of personal preference. Most woods are suitable for the job, even conventional furniture materials such as oak, pine and cedar. You can also use plywood and wood veneer for a more modern look and cost-saving design. Because the frame must support a mattress and one or two sleepers, some metal fasteners or nails that are part of the frame structure should be heavy. The basic construction process for an Asian platform bed consists of building a four-sided drawer frame with vertical wood planks and then applies a platform or series of wooden rods across an inner frame that supports the platform and the mattress. The inner frame is nailed to the outer frame, which can be fitted with nails, metal brackets or wood joints. An Asian style bed leg serves as corner posts and is usually attached from the inside of the frame box. More complex versions of an Asian style bed extend parts of the frame box upwards to form bedside tables and footboards.
