In the wake of the Supreme Court’s sublimely ridiculous and idiotic ruling in the Citizens United case, our country’s politics appear to be open only to the highest bidder. The Citizens United ruling held that corporations are people and, as such, have constitutionally guaranteed free speech rights, including the right to spend as much money as they please on political campaigns.
All this money in politics creates significant questions:
1. How does a political democracy allow the Financial Elite to buy elections?
2. How does the Supreme Court in the world’s largest democracy rule that amoral corporations are people?
3. How can a democracy survive such foolish and silly decisions by the highest judicial body in this land?
Indeed, our democracy is under a withering assault by the Radical Rightwing and their benefactors, the Financial Elite. The danger in all this cannot be overestimated.
It is past the time that we determine to save American democracy by organizing at the grassroots for pro-democracy political candidates and by organizing around issues that can determine whether our middle class is healthy and growing or weak and shrinking.
